Tracking the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on New Haven

After six months of relative stagnation, unemployment claims in New Haven dropped significantly through the Fall to pre pandemic levels. Total weekly unemployment claims have remained below pre-pandemic levels throughout 2022.

Some sectors of the state economy have been hurt more than others by shutdowns and restrictions necessary to limit the spread of COVID-19. Unemployment claims dropped in some sectors while rising in others during the month of May, with Construction, Admin & Support Services, Transportation & Warehousing, leading reductions in claims and Accommodation & Food Services, Professional & Technical Services and Educational Services leading increases in claims.

Parking revenues have begun returning to pre-pandemic levels in most categories. As of June, our street parking revenues seemed to be lagging behind parking garages. We will not have updated street parking data after June.

2022 housing permits in Connecticut are outpacing last year by a significant amount through June. New Haven continues to lead the state in permitting activity by a wide margin.
